Bringing your pet in for surgery can be a daunting experience for you and your animal. Our priority has always been to provide the highest level of patient care possible, which is why we include additional services to keep your pet safe and comfortable throughout any surgical procedure.

Fluid therapy to aid recovery
We use intravenous fluid therapy to deliver fluids directly to your pet’s blood supply. This helps maintain your pet’s blood pressure, decreasing the risk of organ damage during surgery. Fluid therapy also helps the recovery process by preventing dehydration. Hydrated pets recover faster from illness or injury.
Fluid therapy provides us with a quick lifeline in the event of an emergency during surgery. We place an IV catheter in all hospital patients in case of emergency.
What blood tests tell us
We offer bloodwork to determine if your pet is healthy enough to receive anaesthesia and surgery. As much as we wish our pets could speak to us, a blood test is the best way for a vet to gain a clear picture of what’s going on beneath the surface. Bloodwork is also the easiest, fastest, most cost-effective, and least invasive way to investigate, discover, and monitor many health conditions.
The two main things we look at in bloodwork are the complete blood count (CBC) and your pet’s biochemistry.
Complete blood count (CBC)
Your pet’s CBC provides us with detailed information about the various blood cells and platelets. For example, low counts of certain blood cells may point to a hidden condition such as anemia, internal bleeding, or bone marrow and immune system disorders. On the other hand, high counts of certain blood cells signify dehydration, inflammation, or infection. Knowing what’s happening in your pet’s blood allows us to treat them more efficiently for the best possible outcome.
Biochemistry
We look at your pet’s blood biochemistry to understand their organ function, particularly in the liver and kidneys. Biochemistry also helps us find signs of more complex conditions like diabetes, Cushing’s disease, and hyperthyroidism.
Reviewing your pet’s blood allows us to reduce risk and ensure very low to no complications during surgery. If your pet isn’t well enough, we may need to cancel or reschedule your pet’s procedure.
